Playing Blackjack for the First Time

FACT: Blackjack is the very best bet in a casino.

FACT: The vast majority of casino players play the slots.

Can you see something wrong here? I do which is why I asked several of my die-hard, slot- playing friends why they do not play blackjack.

OK, being intimidating is a neutral reason for playing blackjack. But how can a wannabe blackjack player overcome this fear? According to a psychologist friend-of-mine to conquer a person’s fear of doing whatever you’ve got to “develop their confidence in whatever they’re frightened of doing”.

Webster’s dictionary defines optimism as “a religion or belief that someone will behave in a right, appropriate, or efficient way”.

My task, therefore, is to build the confidence of everything you slots-only players to play blackjack by describing to you the correct and efficient way to play. I’m game if you’re so let’s give it a go.

Know The Rules & Objective

First, you have got to understand the rules. The game is played with one or more decks of cards. Whether or not a casino utilizes one or 8 decks is for the moment of no consequence so don’t be worried about it. In blackjack, every card in the 52-card deck counts its face value and you may ignore the suits. A blackjack, that’s the maximum hand, includes an ace plus any ten-value card (10, jack, queen, or king). Blackjacks are special since players acquire an excess payoff (1.5 times their first bet).

Next up is to understand the aim of the game. You may think this is insignificant but you would be amazed by how many players think the purpose is to get to as close to 21 as you can. Wrong. The target is to add up the values of all of the cards in your hand and hope that your hand totals higher than the dealer or you can win if your hand totals 21 or not when the dealer busts. The latter is a term that means a dealer or player’s hand has surpassed 21.

Below are a few examples of how you win or lose your hands. If your hands total 19 and the dealer’s hand is 17 you triumph, (you get paid 1 to 1). For those who have a 16 (or any total under 21) and the dealer busts you win. In case you’ve got 19 and the dealer has 20, you lose. Incidentally, if you and the dealer have the same total that is a push or tie and you do not win or lose. So in the event, you’ve got an 18 and the dealer has an 18, it is a push and you do not lose your first bet.

Play starts after players make their bets in the gambling area before them. If you do not have some casino chips to gamble with, simply put your cash on the design after a round is over and ask the dealer for chips. The trader will count your money and swap them for casino chips.

After all, bets are made, the dealer will deal two cards to each participant and one card face up and one face down to himself. Sometimes the dealer will deal the player cards face up and other times confront or up to one and one down. Not to worry because it actually does not make a difference that way he does it. However, as a general rule, when multiple decks of cards have been dealt from a device called a dealing shoe, the player cards are dealt face up. In single-deck games, player’s cards are often ‘pitched’ from the dealer’s face down.

Do Not Play Against the Other Players But With The Dealer

Always bear in mind that if you play blackjack it’s you against the dealer. Do not worry about what cards your fellow players get because that’s not what is important. Just pay attention to your hand and the value of the dealer’s upcard.

Blackjack players have particular playing choices available to them to attempt to increase their hand. With these options correctly, it is possible to significantly reduce the casino’s edge. Let us start with hitting and standing and we’re going to assume a standard 6-deck game dealt from a shoe.

Taking a hit in blackjack signifies you want the dealer to give you another card. You would normally have a hit once the value of your hand is reduced. The risk when you strike is that if you float you automatically lose. You have to indicate the dealer that you would like another card by making a beckoning motion with your finger or scratching it on the felt (that is done for security reasons). When you ask for another card that the dealer will give it to you face up. You can request as many cards as you want but remember the automatic reduction rule should you bust.

If you’re happy with the total of your hand, you need to stand. Signal this to the trader by waving your hands over the cards.

It is possible to double your initial bet in blackjack in one of two ways. The first is called doubling down and the second is set splitting. These are extremely significant playing plays so listen.

When you need to double down, you match your initial wager by placing the equivalent quantity of chips next to (not on top) of your initial bet. The dealer will provide you one and just one more card. Strategically, it’s sensible to double down when your first two-card hand totals 11 or 10. You’re expecting of course to draw a 10 or picture card for a 20 or 21. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not but in the long term, you will win more money by doubling down on those hands compared to hitting (we will cover the plan when to double down in a minute).

For those who have a set (or two like cards), players have the option of dividing them and playing two hands. Suppose you bet $5 and are dealt a pair of 8 to get a 16. You’re far better off splitting the 8’s and playing two hands beginning with 8 then playing with the first hand as a 16. To initiate the pair splitting you’d double your bet just as you do when you double down (put the secondary wager beside the first bet).
